Refiner, Domhain/Ephemeral and Noah Thompson: EPs Galore!

Another handful of awesome EPs for us to check out that released today, from metal to folk to country! Let’s check them out!

Refiner: Mistake

The second EP from the Canadian Metalcore multi-instrumentalist Christopher Adam is arriving with even more hype around it than his debut in February. It’s easy to see why too, as it’s another great release. Again, it’s sadly another short one, with only two tracks, instrumentals of both also being added to the Bandcamp version. But yeah, both ‘upside uʍop’ and ‘Mistake’ are fantastic, heavy modern metal tracks! Christopher has once again shown that he is an absolute boss when it comes to performing, playing and writing. It also pairs up pretty perfectly with Return to Dust, being a fantastic follow-up. I know back then there was rumours of a full album, and I so hope that’s true as I immediately need more of this yet again! If you’re into the heavy stuff at all, give this a spin, you’ll love it! 8.5/10, would have been higher if we got more!

Domhain & Ephemeral: Of Pine and Oak

The split EP featuring the Irish atmospheric band and the dark folk German’s is certainly an interesting release! It’s only two tracks, but both are long and the atmosphere created throughout them is incredible. It’s certainly not going to be for everyone, but if you’re into an epic, folk sound, I cannot recommend this enough! Both bands’ sounds fit so well together, the tracks blending seamlessly. My only point would have been I’d love to hear the pair actually collab on both tracks, instead of them releasing two separate tracks on the same release. It’s still awesome to see, but I’d be massively interested to hear what they’d come up with together! However, as I said, both songs are pretty great, and I really enjoyed the EP as a whole! It’s not something I’d revisit often, but I’m certainly now a fan of both bands and definitely want to hear more! 7.5/10

Noah Thompson: Kids Like Me

The sophomore EP of the rising neo-traditional country star is a fantastic collection of songs. Whether it’s the awesome (yet interestingly titled) opener, the emotion-fuelled ‘Demons in my Whiskey’ or the epic closer, or the tracks between, it’s all fantastic! It’s 20-minutes of modern, ballad-country greatness. It is all a similar style and energy, but when it’s only five tracks it’s hardly anything to complain about. I’m shocked he isn’t a bigger name already, given his incredibly popular and accessible sound, but then again he’s hardly been going long at all! He certainly has a new fan in me and I immediately want more; hopefully an album next time round so I can hear a bit more variety. A must for any modern country fans, and an easy 8/10 from us!
