Colin Stough: ‘We just went in there and three chords and an idea later we had some music!’

We sat down with the awesome country artist Colin Stough last week, to chat about his recent EP (review here) as well as his touring plans and his dream lineup! Check it out below!

So firstly, tell me about the EP. It seems to have gone down pretty well?

Yeah man! It’s actually doing really good. Definitely got some songs on there that people love, and got some songs on there that a few folks love. But as a whole it’s doing really really good! We’re blessed to have that thing out!

What was the writing process like for it, what was your approach?

Oh man, we just did the same. We went in there and just really wanted to tell a story and put that story in sequences or stages of my life. Just the way we did it, I don’t think it could have gone any better! We just went in there and three chords and an idea later we had some music!

I imagine you’re already working on some new stuff already too, right?

Oh yeah! I just got back from a writers retreat yesterday actually. We were there writing music, getting ready to put together another little project!

Obviously you got your big break on American Idol. What’s it like going from that to a solo career?

Oh man dude, if I can be honest with you, it’s totally different. I thought that’s how it was gonna be, the industry and whatnot, and I got here and it is totally different.

How’s it feel to break into the industry so young?

It feels good, man! Hopefully, by the grace of god, I feel like I’ve got enough time to get really big, you know. I’ve got more time to work with!

Have you got any goals you want to hit early on?

My next goal right now, I’ve got two: I wanna play the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and I wanna get me a hit, man. I don’t even care if it’s just one. But once I get one, the next goal’s gonna be another one!

We’ve always set ourselves at really high goals. My goal before the hit was I wanted to sell out an arena. And we did that, we headlined and sold out an arena back in Mississippi. So that was awesome, and awesome feeling right there!

And you’ve got quite a busy rest of the year planned?

We’re on four tours this year, dude! We’re on the The Lacs tour, the Chase Mathews tour, we’re on Midlands’ tour, and then we’re doing a co-headline tour. So we’re pretty busy, yeah!

And any plans to come to the UK or Europe at all?

I want to, I wanna get over there so bad! It seems like it’s such a good time over there, man! Y’all get me over there, I wanna come. I think it’d be a good ol’ time!

Do you have a dream tour lineup you’d want to be a part of?

Oh yeah, I’d want to be on tour with Marcus King, or Chris Stapleton, or Jason Aldean. Those are my dreams right there. And I mean obviously George Strait, but I’m not going to set myself that high of a standard just yet! But that’s the dream right there, to be on tour with any of those folks! Either that or go on a full worldwide, full year tour with some of my best friends. You know, Randy Houser, Chase Mathews, something like that!

If you were stuck on a desert island, what’s the one album you’d want with you?

Oh yeah, 100%, Synyrd’s last album. I think it’s called Street Survivors? I got the record right here in my player sitting right over here. It’d probably be that one I’d take!
