New Music Mondays: Subway to Sally, DEKAY and Revolting!

A pretty quite (yet heavy) week for new albums as we near the holidays and end of the year, but we still have some fun releases to check out! Let’s do just that!

Subway to Sally: Post Mortem

The German folk metal band returned last Friday with their 15th studio album, just one year removed from their last. It’s exactly what you’d expect from the band or the genre as a whole at this point, and it’s a decent entry into their discography! There’s plenty of huge, catchy choruses, big riffs and epic folk elements throughout, making it an awesome 49-minute listen (if a touch long at times). Tracks like the title one, ‘Nero’, ‘Eisheilige Nacht’ and the beautiful ballad ‘Herz in der Rinde’ are all huge highlights for me. As I said, it is certainly a long album, but if you are into this certainly style it’s definitely worth checking out! It’s amazing that after nearly 35 years the band are still going this strong! It gets a solid 7.5/10 from us!

DEKAY: Start the Rot

Industrial horror-core, this band markets themselves as. I can definitely hear that in this album! It definitely has an air of Rob Zombie, Murderdolls, 3TEETH and NIN about it. It’s quirky and certainly a fun, interesting listen. I think my main issue here is the production. There are some awesome ideas and concepts in here, and I imagine it would sound pretty awesome live, but the mix doesn’t do it much justice. I liked tracks like ‘Social Degradation’ and ‘The Folly of Man’, and if they had less grating mix to them I’d be obsessed. As a debut release it’s a fantastic starting point, and I really want to like it, but it does make for a tricky listen at times. They’re definitely a bad to keep an eye on, but for now I’ll give this a 5/10. Sorry guys!

Revolting: Night of the Horrid

The seventh album from the Swedish death metal band is a half-an-hour full-frontal assault of brutality, and I love it! It’s again not going to be for everyone, even in a primarily heavy list, but the band are insanely talented at their style of death metal, and the playing is off the charts! Tracks like the brutal opener, ‘Hell from the Sky’ and ‘The Final Journey’ are personal highlights of mine. However, there really isn’t a bad song on the album, and if you’re into this sort of thing I cannot recommend the album enough! It’s another short entry into this list but honestly, I can’t say much more about it other than ‘it’s awesome’. A solid 7.5/10 from me!
