Sailor Hunter, Emily Lockett and Electron: EPs Galore!

Been a few weeks since we’ve had a few EPs to check out and join our Galore series, so I’m excited to dive into a pretty heavy collection and see what we think. Join us in listening to a metal-country-metal sandwich!

Sailor Hunter: Evolution

The Swedish melodeath band release their first EP in two years this coming Friday. And, following the name of the EP, it does feel like a bit of an evolution for the genre. Don’t get me wrong, there are certainly still the blueprints of the likes of In Flames and Arch Enemy in it, but there’s just as much Trivium-like metalcore and even some power metal elements in the choruses. And whether it’s singles like ‘Ashes’ or new tracks like the title one, all four songs are awesome. It’s heavy and packed full of huge riffs, great harsh vocals and a surprising amount of catchy hooks. It’s a really solid, short release too, and has immediately left me wanting to hear more! Each song is awesome in its own way, but my personal favourite has to be ‘Condemned by Creation’. It has a bit of everything the band does so well, and each element fits together perfectly, creating a truly epic song. It’s well worth checking out if you’re into the genre or just metal in general! 7.5/10

Emily Lockett: To Be Continued

A tad cheeky, but we’ve already reviewed this EP! Check it out here!

Electron: Hollow

The British metalcorers put out their brand new EP on Friday, a follow up to their awesome debut album last year. It’s packed full of some great melody and truly catchy vocals, made utterly brutal by the heavy breakdowns in the middle of each track. It’s a pretty standard formula/structure that’s done to perfection by the band again and again. Some of the riffs are excellent and pretty heavy too, but the majority of each track feels more like a an alt metal or even melodic hardcore punk style. It gives off big Strung Out vibes, which is in no way a bad thing. It just doesn’t really remind me of any wave of metalcore so far, so maybe we’re entering the next phase of the genre? Either way, this is an awesome heavy EP that, lick most, was over far too soon.

Tracks like ‘Tame’ and ‘Loathe’ were personal favourites, but none of the five songs were bad. It’s different, especially for the UK scene these days, and I’m shocked they’re already not a bigger name. They deserve to be major players in the underground scene with releases like this, for sure! If you’re into catchy modern metal, check this out, you’ll love it as much as I did! It’s an easy 8.5/10 from me!
