The awesome UK hard rock outfit Night Thieves dropped their brand new EP just a few days ago. We reviewed it (find here), it was awesome, so we just had to chat with the band about it!
How would you describe your sound? Any major inspirations?
It’s been really hard to define our sound because of our range of influences. We mainly describe ourselves at alt-metal/heavy rock but recently we’ve had comparisons to symphonic metal and hard rock, we once got described as New Metalcore which sounded awesome!
Tell me about the EP, any specific story or themes behind it?
Polarity’s major theme is of how opposing points of views and worlds. It covers how when we are faced with another version of events we can question our own experience and reality. It also covers how stories are told by different people, creating opposing views and tales of the same events.
We really tried to have the keys themes running through the whole EP, along with the artwork and other imagery and are so please with how it turned out!
What’s the writing process like for you guys?
It usually starts with Rick (bass) or Paul (guitar) recording some blueprints of songs and trying to work out a rough sketch of a song. Then Jess (vocals), starts to write vocal lines and we will all get together to refine the tracks based on these ideas. The last two EPs have been written without a drummer, so the demos were programmed and then the parts played in the studio. For Polarity, Tom Connolly (Dream State) played in the studio and he did an amazing job! Now Ryan (drums) has joined it will be interesting to see how we work going forward and how we all come together in the writing process.
With this being your second EP, are you looking to stay with the format of them and singles, or eventually an album? It seems like a tricky call in the music industry these days!
This is actually our third EP, so we’ve stayed with this format for a while. So far we really like it as it enables us to write with overarching themes in mind and have a defined release. However, we are definitely looking at other formats, such as stand alone singles or even album, we’re open to anything!
Do you have much planned for the year? Plenty of gigs/festivals?
This year is looking to be our most exciting yet! The release of the EP has got us off to a great start now we’ve teamed up with Reaction Management you can expect gig announcements very soon. We are also back in writing mode, getting early ideas together for the next release. It’s an exciting time to be around Night Thieves!
What do you think the UK music scene is like these days. Seen you skirting between NWOCR and the metal scene, it’s nice to see that sort of crossover!
Thanks, that’s great to hear! We never try to stick to a particular genre and love that we combine different scenes. The UK scene is really exciting at the moment, there are so many great bands coming through and getting the recognition they deserve! So many bands are really supportive of each other too and encouraging, so it’s really great to be involved in it.
Do you have a plan for the next five years? Any goals you want to hit?
Our main aim is to keep getting better at what we do! Hopefully in the next five years we can keep refining our sound, possibly an album if it’s the right thing for us at the time. It would be awesome to play more high profile gigs around the UK and ultimately some amazing festivals like 2000 Trees and Download.
Do you have a dream tour lineup you’d love to be a part of, whether it’s supporting a big band or travelling around with your friends?
There are so many bands we would love to play with such as Spiritbox, Bring Me the Horizon and Architects that would be a dream come true! There are also so many amazing bands coming up in the UK scene at the moment that we would love to play with such as Kite Thief, Arimea, Mallavora and Liquid State, our sounds compliment each other so well and would be a great gig!
