So, who’s ready for a new style of review here at Overtone? My fiancé, the wonderful Jade, has been wanting to jump in and help me out with some writing for this for a while now. And we both decided what better place for her to start than a big country-rock album? She is not a writer at all, and sent me this collection of ADHD ramblings of her thoughts on the Jason Aldean album. So I figured screw it, why not just put it in, as is?! So here it is. Have fun reading, and I hope you enjoy my wife-to-be’s semi-coherent thoughts put to paper!
I am not a writer or a musician, but I do love music! I thought it would be funny to try write a review, but more just whatever pops into my head as I hear the song. So this is super disjointed, but it is in order. So if you want to see my thoughts on this Album and my very poor grammar, here it is.
Tough crowd – Very stadium country. A bit bro country. Strong chorus. Don’t want to like it but I do…
Let your boys be country – super catchy, again super bro county as suggest by the name of song
easy listening, love the tone of his voice
really don’t want to like him.
Knew you’d come around – feels a bit rocky than the first two. Also slightly ballady. Build up to last chorus is sexy as.
Hungover in a hotel – very stripped back and emotional. Again very stadium. Very stripped back final chorus, love the guitar solo toward the end, nice way to end song.
Try that in a small town – nope
Whiskey drink – again feels a bit more stripped back. Super strong vocals. Love love love. Simple but strong. Love the little back ground vocals, don’t know if it’s serious but love the back street boys vibes
fav so far!
Whose rearview – very different vibes straight off the bat. Almost more of a Chris Young vibe or even early Taylor Swift break up song. Love the guitar in this one, the vocals are very smooth and sexy.
I’m over you – slow and stripped back. Electronic drum beat comes in out of blue, but works so well. Don’t think I’ve head that sort of electronic drum sound used in a more stripped back country song. It adds drama
super odd though, I think I prefer the second half of the song where is isn’t used as prominently.
Rather watch you – Again, it’s gone super electronic for the drum beats. I really don’t know if it works… it distracts me from the song itself. And then actual drums come in almost half way through and I love it. Maybe electro beats aren’t for country in my opinion.
Breakup breakdown – over all can we just not use a beat board… thank you. Love the chorus, love the guitar. I just don’t get the use of the beat board, the random taps just aren’t needed, if anything it ruins it.
Get away from you – love the sound when it’s more stripped back. The softness and smoothness of the bridge into the chorus just makes my ears happy. And yay, no beat board (at least any that is obvious to a non musician
) yes more guitar slides love it and background vocals
Changing Bars – mix of electronic drum and normal. Fits a bit more, just don’t get the use if you have a strong drummer though… oooooh pretty chorus, like it a lot. More low notes in the vocals when building up to bigger parts.
From this beer on – this one kinda just blends in a bit more. Noting really catches me. Wait…it gets sexy at like 2 minutesish but then just drops straight back to normal. The vocals got a bit more interesting, the guitar got almost heavy. I just thing it needs a bit more.
Highway Desperado – The title track….I immediately get why. Straight away it hits all the right spots. Some sort of strings which makes it dreamy, the vocals are on fire. Again slightly rocky with the drums and guitar solos. Shows off his vocals a lot. Yes!
Overall: for a 14 track album I would actually say there is a fair amount of variety. No two songs sound overly similar which I am finding quite often with these longer county albums. There are a couple that just didn’t work for me, but over all I liked it a lot.
The Score: 8.5/10
